If you’re in need of some desert fun, but have a hankering for some eco-friendliness, head to the Desert Shade Eco Lodge in Mitzpe Ramon!
We stayed there for a couple of nights as part of our family adventure across the whole of Israel, and had a great time, especially when we realized Desert Shade Eco Lodge is located on the rim of the magnificent Ramon Crater (or Machtesh Ramon), one of Israel’s most spectacular sites!
The views from this place are outstanding, especially from the charming main communal lobby, the heartbeat of Desert Shade, and the perfect place to chillout in the late afternoon (as we did for many an hour – we were recovering from an exhausting few days prior to heading down to Mitzpe Ramon)…below is the view from the main lobby…
You probably shouldn’t come expecting luxury, because luxury you’re not going to get, but if you need a great base in the Mitzpe Ramon area – and there’s a LOT to see in the area – then this is a great option! The rooms are hand-built, and designed to merge with their surroundings, so home comforts are minimal. You can also choose between private rooms, communal tents, and even a dorm tent. The private room we stayed in was cute enough for our purposes as a family, and located at the front row of the Desert Shade complex, so we got to see the early morning sun come up over the Crater – stunning!
Other facilities – including the showers and communal kitchen – are basic but more than enough to keep you happy. Again, don’t come expecting luxury, you’re coming for the desert experience, the one on one with nature…as Ziv the owner puts it on the website: We are not a “five stars”, we are a million stars…
You can also enjoy a variety of tours and activities, just contact owner Ziv if you’re interested in jeep tours, hiking, biking, or visiting the local Bedouin nomad community. There is also food available, with a unique restaurant onsite offering local homemade cuisine, and their very own vineyard which produces wine from grapes grown in the desert – the Rujum Winery!
Yep, this is a great little place for desert eco warriors!
